Manila, Philippines – Media Broadcaster and wife of defeated senatorial candidate Mar Roxas airs frustration over the recent travel of President Rodrigo Duterte and his 200 delegates composed of government officials and their staff to attend the 25th Nikkei International Conference on the future of Asia on May 31 in Tokyo, Japan.

Korina wrote in her column on Pilipino Star Ngayon, dated May 30, It is becoming a norm under the Duterte Administration to have such large number of entourage for every official travel.

“Sa mga nakaraang administrasyon, kapag ganito karami ang sumasama sa Presidente sa kanyang mga opisyal na biyahe ay binabatikos kaagad nang husto. Kesyo walang delikadesa, gastos lang ng gobyerno. Pero ngayon, tila walang isyu,” Sanchez said.
President Duterte is invited by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to deliver a keynote address at the 25th Nikei Conference on the Future of Asia on Friday, May 31, in Tokyo, Japan, together with the President’s 16 Cabinet Secretaries and tincluding their Cabinet members’ staff and other government officials according to Philippine Ambassador to Japan, Jose Laurel.
The Nikkei Conference on the Future of Asia is an annual meeting that gathers government and business leaders to share their respective assessment of Asia’s prospects and their ideas as to the direction Asia should chart for itself.

Philippine Envoy to Japan Jose Laurel recently made a statement that the said trip was a sort of pabuya or reward to his administration officials for the success of 2019 election that results favorable to the candidates endorsed by President.

The said statement made by Laurel concerning the Cabinet members joining the President in his trip to Japan was later on denied by the Palace.

According to Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo, the presence of invited Cabinet members is necessary to the trip given the cooperation between the Philippines and Japan in various aspects of governance – from strengthened economic exchange to defense and security.

The Palace spokesman said, Laurel was either innocently speculating for lack of information or was misinformed on the nature of the trip of Cabinet members.

Sanchez added, that it would leave a bad impression to bring such a huge number of government officials even if the travel expenses will be shouldered by Nikkei, who will sponsor the economic forum.

“Kailangan bang bitbitin lahat? Hindi ba nakakahiya na karaniwang Pilipino ang ipinakita na naman kung saan bitbit ang buong barangay? Kahit ba sagot ng Nikkei ang sinumang sumama, dapat bang isama lahat?” Korina questioned.
