Senator Cynthia Villar chair
of the Senate agriculture and food committee, reiterated on Tuesday after the
Department of Agriculture (DA) is planning to import galunggong (round scad) due
to increasing prices due to high in demand but lack in supply.
Villar is cannot understand on why most Filipinos insist on
eating the poor man’s fish even though there were other fishes in the market
that were cheaper and affordable.
People were even asking her to help them secure import
permits to bring in galunggong in our market despite higher prices.
“Yang galunggong na yan
masyadong kontrobersyal.
other means which are cheaper and available. Dami namang choices bakit ba
ini-insist ‘yan,” she added.
Due to seasonal deamand and the three-month closure of
fishingzones in Palawan and Zambales fish prices have skyrocketed.
“Bakit ba
gustong-gusto ‘yung galunggong kung kulang ang galunggong? Eh lalong
nae-encourage ‘yung price increase. Ba’t ayaw kumain ng gulay?” Villar added.
Prices of galunggong have nearly doubled to P280 per kilo.
The DA has approved the importation of 45,000 metric tons of galunggong and
other small pelagic fish. They are planning of approving a second batch of
imports of up to 100,000 MT according to reports.
