The Senate Finance Committee chaired by Senator Juan Edgardo
Angara, has promised to further increase the 2020 budget of the Office of the
Vice President to support its anti-poverty initiatives.
Sen. Angara said the panel will “at the very least,
protect” the OVP’s proposed budget in the next steps of deliberation.
“At the very least, we
will protect your budget, but I am sure many of us would even want to increase
it, given the demands of your office. Napakalaki po ng mandato, ang laki rin po
ng expectations ng mga tao, so we have to deal with all these things,” he added.
Vice President Leni Robredo who appeared
before the committee, last Monday (September 16), and presented the OVP’s
proposed budget of P673.02 million for 2020.
The committee chairman was impressed
by the Vice President’s budget presentation. He commended the OVP’s endeavors
to reach remote communities despite working on a tight budget through its
flagship anti-poverty program, “Angat Buhay”.
“[We] would like to congratulate you for all your good
programs. Naabot niyo iyong hindi man lang namin alam na merong gano’ng lugar.
Congratulations po!” Angara told
Robredo.
The budget was later approved upon the motion of Senate Majority Floor Leader Migz Zubiri, who moved that this be done "without prejudice to increasing it".
“The motion is carried and we will favorably endorse without prejudice to
increasing but not decreasing the budget of the Office of the Vice President.”
Robredo
welcomed the Senate committee's gesture, saying that this will enhance her office’s anti-poverty programs and projects.
“Yung next three years is more for strengthening what we have
started already, expanding our coverage, and making sure that all the
initiatives that we started will become sustainable,” she said.
