Vice President Leni Robredo questions the government as to why flock of Chinese nationals allowed to work in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) industry when gambling is illegal in China.

During her weekly radio program, Robredo made the remarks about the influx of Chinese workers in the country.

“‘Di ba, hininto nga natin iyong ating mga gambling, iyong mga permits, bakit sila pinapayagan? Tapos iligal sa kanila kaya pumupunta dito. Kung iligal sa kanila, bakit tayo iyong nagha-house?" she asked

The vice president stressed that it is important for the government to investigate as to how many Chinese nationals have entered the Philippines as well as their purpose of stay.

“Sobrang dami na na hindi alam iyong numbers. At tingin ko kailangan talagang balikan iyong polisiya, tignan iyong mga nandito, ano iyong ginagawa nila, ligal ba iyong pag-stay nila nang matagal,” she said

According to earlier reports, China recently announced a crackdown on gambling overseas as it hinted that several of its citizens were working illegally in POGO centers.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila also bucked the state gaming operator’s plan to confine Chinese workers to so called POGO “hubs,” saying it might “infringe on the basic legal rights” of its citizens.

It also reminded its citizens that gambling, including online gaming, is prohibited in their country.

Any form of gambling by Chinese citizens is illegal under Chinese laws and regulations, the embassy stated.
