Newly-elected Speaker of the House Alan Peter Cayetano promised
to turn the House of Representative into the House of the People during his speech on Monday.
He was elected as leader of the House by a 266-28 vote, Cayetano asked his fellow lawmakers to be pro-people during his acceptance speech.
“People love their congressmen, but they love to hate Congress. This is
something I ask all of you in unison. Let us change that because this is the
House of the People,” Cayetano said.
“We should respect, and love our congressman but we should also feel
that the House of Representatives is the House of the People. Tayo po ang
takbuhan ng sambayanan,” He said.
“We
will do what is right, so that we will have a Congress that is relevant,
responsive and reliable.”
He added.
The former Foreign Affair Secretary and President Duterte's
running mate in the last 2016 Presidential election, Taguig Rep. Alan Peter
Cayetano, was elected speaker on Monday, despite many controversies surfaced
during the speakership nominations.
The Taguig Representative will serve as speaker for 15
months under a power-sharing agreement that Duterte proposed. While Marinduque
Rep. Lord Allan Velasco will serve the remaining 21 months of the 18th
Congress.
Cayetano received prayers from his colleagues led by CIBAC
Rep. Eddie Villanueva, an evangelist before taking his oath as the Speaker.
"Sana po ako'y maging worthy at sana po ay tulungan
niyo ako para sa loob ng 15 na buwan ay mapagsilbihan po natin ang ating mga
kababayang mabuti at lahat po ng nasa legislative agenda, ubusin na natin at
ipasa na natin dahil mas magandang magawa na natin ito kaagad," he said.
