Playing safe! Mar Roxas avoids attacking Duterte to improve chances of winning

Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas is reportedly avoiding attacks against the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte despite being part of the opposition senatorial bets - to improve his chances of winning in the upcoming midterm election.

According to Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice, who is also Roxas’s campaign manager, the latter’s attacks to Duterte are limited to policy issues, knowing that the President is still popular.

“[S]urveys show that all those who hit him are down. The harder you hit him, the lower you go,” Erice said.

Erice said that Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, Roxas’ colleague in the Otso Diretso slate is an example of a candidate who was affected because of his own attacks against the President.

Earlier, Erice cited that wearing yellow in 2016 a “mistake”, implying that Roxas’s association with former President Benigno Aquino III costs him his candidacy in 2016.

Yellow was the color of the Liberal Party (LP), of which Roxas was the standard bearer and Aquino was chairman.
