On Saturday, Vice President Leni Robredo gave a crash course
in the martial law era under former President Ferdinand Marcos.
From the time she described as oppressive and full of lies,
Robredo said that signs of dictatorship “are happening again.”
The vice president, in her speech, also told the senior
highs school students of the University of Santo Tomas to be vigilant of the
signs.
"What we need are our collective daily acts of
kindness, respect for people's rights and servant leadership. These realizations
are critical today when there are signs that some of the things we talked about
are happening again," She said,
She then also drew parallels between the past and the
current time, like how the media is being attacked by bullies and online
trolls.
"The media is under attack. Those who speak dissent are
bullied or trolled in real life or social media. The people are arrested,
tortured and killed because they are on the drug list," Robredo said.
"The lies had continued until today," she added without
mentioning who did it.
She also asked the students not to forget the lessons of the
past, of the EDSA revolution as she urged them to take their part in protecting
the rights of the Filipino people.
Former senator Bongbong Marcos, son of former president Marcos,
filed an electoral protest against Robredo who won the vice presidency in 2016
elections.
Marcos had accused Robredo of cheating in 2016 elections,
dared the latter to join him in asking the Presidential Electoral Tribunal
(PET) to immediately start the recount of the votes by filing a joint notion.
