Manila, Philippines – India’s Prime Minister Narenra Modi has expressed his deep appreciation for President Rodrigo Duterte’s acceptance to visit and attend ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, says an Indian top official on Thursday.

India Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Preeti Saran, describe the bilateral meeting between the two leaders as “very cordial”.

Also during the press briefing, Saran disclosed that the Prime Minister conveyed his deep gratitude towards president Duterte for pushing through with his trip despite the Mt. Mayon volcano situation in the Philippines.

“Our Prime Minister conveyed his deep appreciation to President Duterte. He was aware of the risk of Mayon Volcano that has erupted which is naturally a cause of concern,” Saran said.

“And in fact because of that, President Duterte had to delay his flight because he needs to attend to issues related to assuring safety and whichever arrangements that they need back home,” she added.

Saran shared how Prime Minister Modi appreciated the fact that the president brought along a high-level delegation which includes his Cabinet officials in the said trip, which conveys  “underlining the importance that he personally attached to this visit.”

“That gesture was deeply appreciated by our Prime Minister and he conveyed his sincerest thanks to him for that,” she also added.
During the bilateral meeting, the External Affairs Secretary said the two leaders have discussed wide range issues of mutual interest which includes illicit drug trafficking, the sharing of intelligence and fighting terrorism such as urban terrorism.

Meanwhile, Saran also said that President Duterte instilled his deepest appreciation to Prime Minister Modi for the assistance of $500, 000 that India gave for Marawi victims’ resettlement.
