Manila, Philippines – India’s Prime Minister Narenra Modi
has expressed his deep appreciation for President Rodrigo Duterte’s acceptance
to visit and attend ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, says an Indian top
official on Thursday.
India Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Preeti Saran,
describe the bilateral meeting between the two leaders as “very cordial”.
Also during the press briefing, Saran disclosed that the
Prime Minister conveyed his deep gratitude towards president Duterte for
pushing through with his trip despite the Mt. Mayon volcano situation in the
Philippines.
“Our Prime Minister conveyed his deep appreciation to
President Duterte. He was aware of the risk of Mayon Volcano that has erupted
which is naturally a cause of concern,” Saran said.
“And in fact because of that, President Duterte had to delay
his flight because he needs to attend to issues related to assuring safety and
whichever arrangements that they need back home,” she added.
Saran shared how Prime Minister Modi appreciated the fact
that the president brought along a high-level delegation which includes his
Cabinet officials in the said trip, which conveys “underlining the importance that he personally
attached to this visit.”
“That gesture was deeply appreciated by our Prime Minister
and he conveyed his sincerest thanks to him for that,” she also added.
During the bilateral meeting, the External Affairs Secretary said
the two leaders have discussed wide range issues of mutual interest which
includes illicit drug trafficking, the sharing of intelligence and fighting terrorism
such as urban terrorism.
Meanwhile, Saran also said that President Duterte instilled his
deepest appreciation to Prime Minister Modi for the assistance of $500, 000
that India gave for Marawi victims’ resettlement.
President Duterte attended a retreat and plenary session together
with ASEAN heads of state and the Prime Minister on Thursday.
Above all these, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque confirmed
that PH gets $1.25 billion worth of investment deals and pledges, which are
expected to generate thousand jobs for Filipinos.
