Manila, Philippines - Vice President Leni Robredo, visited last
Friday and spent time with displaced residents of Marawi particularly the women
weavers diverting their attention through weaving as a way of healing from the
nightmares of war.
With the Office of the Vice
President and Marife Malabanan, a Filipino based in Austria, Robredo brought threads and weavers and gave away
lipsticks to the women weavers of Marawi, as this was their request to the Vice
President when she visited them on her birthday last April.
The said visit is part of the “Angat Buhay” program of the
Office of the Vice President continuing efforts to assist our Muslim brothers
and sisters from the last man-made catastrophe.
Robredo made her own hand at weaving during the
visit, as she hears the stories of how the women lost their homes and loved
ones brought about by the conflict.
Most of the women were
displaced at the height of the months-long siege of Marawi, became beneficiaries of
livelihood training with the “I am Marawi Women
(I.M. Women) Weaving and Empowerment Program” through
the Office of the Vice President’s partner SPARK! The Philippines and the Austrian
Embassy, in partnership with Sinagtala PH.
“Dito
pinakinggan ko ang kanilang mga istorya––kung paano sila nawalan ng tahanan,
binawian ng mga mahal sa buhay, at kung paano sila natulungan ng paghahabi para
malampasan ang mga pangyayaring ito,” she said.
“Hanga
ako hindi lamang sa kanilang pagkamalikhain kundi sa tapang at pagpupursige na
kanilang ipinakita sa araw-araw, sa gitna ng kanilang pinagdaanan at kanilang
muling pagbangon,” Robredo added
Robredo also led the turnover of the housing units where she had
the opportunity to see the developments in “Angat Buhay” Village, a transitory
housing initiative funded by partners from the private sector under OVP’s Angat
Buhay program.
