To add flavor
to the graduation rites of the Philippine Military Academy’s (PMA) Masidlawin
Class of 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte will give a house and lot to the class
valedictorians.
The President
announced during the simultaneous commencement exercises of the PMA and PNPA on
Friday, that both Cadet First Class Gemalyn Sugui and Fire Cadet Lei Anne
Banico Palermo will receive the worth P2 million house and lot each.
“Let me add
a flavor to the guys that are—the… maybe you’d do more for the country. This is
just a challenge. The following certificates from the Office of the President
were awarded to the recipients in the program earlier this afternoon,” Duterte
said
“The
certificate of ownership of house and lot for the class valedictorian, a house
and lot, P2 million from the Vista Land company of Manny Villar,” he added
Sugui, who
was from Echague, Isabela, earlier earned a Bachelor’s degree in Management
Economics from the University of the Philippines Baguio topped this year’s PMA
class.
On the other hand, Palermo originated from Zamboanga City, topped PNPA’s 2020 class.
She is said to be joining the Bureau of Fire Protection.
“These are
the beneficiaries of the house and lot. So puro babae. ‘Yung boyfriend na
katabi mo, senyasan mo na hindi sila pwede pumasok ng bahay na lasing,
nagloloko, nagbabae, this will be — sabihin mo — akin ito at huwag kag
palaboy-laboy diyan (They’re both girls. Tell your boyfriend that they cannot
enter the house if they’re drunk, cheating, womanizing, because it’s yours and
they can’t stick around there),” the president said
Meanwhile,
the class “goat,” or the cadet who graduated last in the list, received a gun
certificate for a Rock Island Armory .45-caliber pistol with three magazines.
A class “goat”
refers to the last cadet on the list of graduates. Instead of ridicule, a goat
is accorded respect for striving to beat all odds and graduate along with the
rest of the class.
For the first time, President Duterte was not able to attend the simultaneous graduation
rites due to the quarantine measured brought about by the coronavirus.
