Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman has encouraged the national
government to continue the mandate of extending free condoms and other contraceptives
amid the lockdown in Luzon.
Lagman said that as Luzon lockdown will most likely be extended
due to COVID pandemic, giving free condoms should be continued.
Being the author of the Reproductive Health Law under
Republic Act No. 10354, Lagman said the “intimacies between couples who are
locked down together break the barriers of social distancing”
Some officials of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for
COVID-19 sees possible two-week extension of the enhanced community quarantine.
“I urge the government to continue discharging its mandate
of extending free reproductive health supplies and services to acceptors from
the marginalized sectors,” said Lagman.
The lawmaker said drug stores and pharmacies must have
enough supplies of reproductive health products.
Lagman also joined the calls for Duterte administration to
extend the lockdown after its deadline on April 14 amid the still rising cases
of coronavirus infections.
He said, the extension is much needed to give enough time to
conduct mass testing in the areas with reported cases of infection.
Lagman explained that the remaining days until deadline “will
not be sufficient to adequately conduct mass testing” even for just selected
affected areas.
“It would be extremely difficult to implement initial
selective and subsequent comprehensive mass testing in a dispersed and mobile
population,” he said.
“Stemming the spread of the novel coronavirus is very
complicated and cannot be answered by isolation and social distancing alone
because so many COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic,” said Lagman.
