Vice President Leni Robredo earlier received backlash from critics over her comment that President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs is a 'failure'.

According to Robredo, Duterte's war against narcos tainted the country's international image.

On Monday, in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart”, Robredo clarified that she does not want the fight against narco to stop, but noted that number of illegal drug users remains high.

“It failed in the sense that it has not… it has not… successfully curbed the number of drug users that… that should have been curbed from the very start. Kasi iyong numbers nga, rising, eh,” Robredo said

She said that from around 1.6 million users in 2016, it grew to 7 to 8 million number of addicts during the President's term.

“Ang… ang paniniwala ko, ang criminal justice approach, dapat gamitin iyon para sa mga drug suppliers and drug dealers. Pero as far as iyong… iyong drug addicts are concerned, it should be treated as an addiction, eh. Dapat mas heavy on community-based prevention,” Robredo said

On the other, Robredo stressed that she still does not want the war on drugs to stop, but said that government should assess what is wrong with it.

Meanwhile, following Robredo's initial comment, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., also slammed the vice president.

“How does she know it isn’t working? Is she in touch with… El Chapo? Who else can tell the war’s going well or badly?” Locsin wrote on Tweeter.

“I wanted to make a case for declaring victory but she says it’s a clearly a defeat. So clearly we must fight on. Never say surrender; just go on saying die,” he said.
