Manila, Philippines - Magdalo Partylist Rep. Gary Alejano on Friday defended Social Welfare Secretary Rolando Bautista who received verbal attacks from broadcaster Erwin Tulfo.

The former Marines officer and also a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy said Bautista deserves to be treated with respect.

“I know General Bautista as a professional, dedicated, well-accomplished and respected officer in the AFP. But regardless whether one is a military officer or not, everyone must be treated with respect,” said Alejano as reported by  the Manila Bulletin

He called on Tulfo “not to create and perpetuate a culture of badmouthing, ill manners and hate.”

“Professionalism should be observed more so in media practice given the wide reach of their platform, ” the opposition lawmaker said. “This has been an issue with a few media practitioners which needs to be addressed.”

He stated that the media “can do away with inappropriate language by keeping in mind work ethics and respect towards other people.”

“We must take advantage of our platforms correctly and use them to spread good values instead. Let us also be reminded that we should serve as role models to the young ones in our society,” Alejano said

Earlier,Tulfo has thrown rants and criticisms to Bautista for rejecting to grant him a phone interview in his Radio Program “Tutok Tulfo” on Radyo Pilipinas.

He later on admitted that he has been excessive for lambasting the DSWD Secretary Rolando, but will not apologize for his actions.

“I ask for an apology sa excessive ranting, ‘yung sobrang pagmumura at galit ay medyo nasobrahan nga. five minutes of ranting, I think that was too much… Pero ‘yung pagpupuna sa kanya na wala siyang ginagawa, na kailangan magtrabaho siya, it will stay. Hindi ko babawiin iyun, because wala sa lahi namin na binabawi ng commentaries namin about trabaho mo,” Tulfo  said in an interview with CNN Philippines last Friday

It got Tulfo furious when Bautista refused to answer his phone for an interview during Tulfo’s radio show last Thursday (May 30).

The broadcaster maintained that what he said has basis, because as government official, Bautista should be available to the public.

“Yung ‘Wala kang silbi,’ that I will not take back because ayaw niyang sumagot. Mga tao nag-aantay. Eversince maupo si Secretary Bautista sa DWSD, ni nungka hindi malaman ng mga tao ang plataporma niya o ano ang plano niya sa ahensya,” he said.
