Vice President Leni Robredo has acknowledged that it was a
suicidal strategy to focus on attacking President Rodrigo Duterte at the peak
of his popularity which costs the Otso Diretso’s failure in the recent midterm
elections.
Robredo, however, said that it was a deliberate choice by
the opposition senatorial slate to hit Duterte because they could not tolerate the
president’s abuses and failures.
“Maraming tumutuligsa na, ‘Dapat kasi hindi masyadong
tumitira iyong mga kandidato ng Otso kasi napakapopular ng Pangulo’. From the
very start, alam namin iyon. From the very start, alam namin na napakataas ng
approval rating ng Pangulo, na bawat pagtutuligsa ay talagang makakabawas."
"Pero choice kasi iyon, Ka Ely, ng aming mga kandidato. Alam nila iyon,” Robredo said during a
radio interview with DZXL’s Ely Saludar
“Wala ako doon sa structure ng main campaign, nasa parallel
ako, pero alam ko na parati sa kanilang dini-discuss iyong mga surveys…ano ang
epekto ng pamamansin sa mga ginagawa ng administrasyon. Pero choice kasi iyon,
Ka Ely, eh: Doon ka ba sa mas popular o doon ka sa tama?” she added.
Robredo pointed out that Otso Diretso candidates believe it
was the right thing to do, to point out the President’s mistakes.
“Marami sa kanila tumutuligsa noong extrajudicial killings,
marami sa kanila tumutuligsa noong epekto ng TRAIN Law. Puwede naman na hindi
nila iyon, parang, manahimik na lang sila. Puwede naman iyon, eh, kasi mas
marami silang ma-e-engganyo na supporters ng Pangulo, na huwag umayaw sa kanila
kasi hindi tinutuligsa iyong Pangulo,” she said
“Pero tingin ko, hindi nila matitiis na may nakikita na
silang mali pero hindi sila iimik para sa popularidad. Tingin ko, iyong mga
kandidato natin hindi ganoon,” she added.
