Former Bureau of Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon is the
new Deputy Administrator at the Office of the Civil Defense.
President Rodrigo Duterte named Faeldon after he signed the
appointment paper on December 22.
The former BOC chief will replace Rodolfo Demosthenes
Santillan as the new Deputy of OCD.
Faeldo has resigned from BOC in August after he was linked
to a corruption scandal, highlighted after the discovery of P6.4- billion
illegal drugs shipment from China which slipped past through the scrutiny of
the bureau.
President Rodrigo Duterte, on the other hand, remained firm
that he still trusts Faeldon after accepting the latter’s resignation.
“From the tone of his resignation, he’s very disappointed
but I really believe he is an honest man. The Government would need Faeldon” the
president said.
In November, the Department of Justice (DOJ) cleared Faeldon
of the drug charges filed against him over the P6.4 billion shabu shipment. DOJ
cited that the Philippine Drug’s Enforcement Agency failed to state clearly the
acts committed by Faeldon that would constitute commission of the charges.
“The evidence adduced by the PDEA in support of the charges
were insufficient to establish probable case,” the DOJ findings read.
The president also reiterated that the former marine captain
is an honest man and he is not like other corrupt officials.
“Pero si Faeldon is not the one. He is not that kind of
person. Hindi ko siya dedepensahan (I’m not defending him). Faeldon has written
me thrice, asking me to relieve him,” the president once said.
