Robredo praises former president Cory Aquino despite Duterte remark: ‘Ang mahalaga, hindi inabuso ang kapangyarihan’

Manila, Philippines - On Sunday, August 4, Vice President Leni  Robredo, praises the former President Cory Aquino for her “inspiring” leadership, emphasizing  Cory’s honest governance and the critical role she played in bringing back democracy to the country.

On the other hand while President Rodrigo Roa Duterte downplayed the contributions of the former president, by citing that she was only popularized because she “lost her husband,” Senator Ninoy Aquino, “in the hands of” the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Duterte announced the said remarks the day after the commemoration of the former president’s 10th death anniversary.

While Robredo, consequently, said Cory Aquino has proven that she was more than just Ninoy’s wife, that she gave the respect it deserved with the power entrusted to her.

“Hindi siguro nagma-matter kung paano nakilala, pero iyong nagma-matter, noong binigyan ng pagkakataong makapagsilbi, paano nagsilbi?” Robredo said in her radio show, BISErbisyong LENI.

“Kasi iba-iba naman talaga iyong circumstances… Pero iyong pinaka-tanong: Noong nabigyan ng pagkakataon, paano ginamit iyong kapangyarihan na binigay sa kaniya? Alam nating lahat na siya din iyong halimbawa ng hindi talaga nag-abuso sa kapangyarihan na binigay.” She added

For Leni Robredo, she owes her political awakening to the 1986 People Power Revolution recognized that Cory Aquino as a woman and a mother exemplified strength amid the difficulties she faced under the Marcos regime, but also during the “turning point” of regaining the country’s democracy.

“Alam natin na iyong pinagdaanan niya hindi basta-basta. Hindi lang sa nawala iyong asawa, pero bago nawala iyong asawa, kung ano-anong panggigipit iyong napagdaanan noong panahon ng rehimeng Marcos. Noong nakaupo na bilang presidente, alam nating sunod-sunod na kudeta iyong nalampasan,” said Robredo.

“Pero maaalala kasi siya kasi iyong kaniyang administrasyon, Ka Ely, iyon iyong turning point ng pag-regain natin ng ating demokrasya, ng ating mga democratic institutions. Kaya napakalaki ng kontribusyon para sa ating bansa.”  She added.

“Parating tinatawaran, lalo na ng mga supporters ng dating diktador, iyong kakayahan [niya]. Wala namang presidenteng perpekto, pero siguro kung may isang puwedeng maipagmalaki na hindi nang-abuso, hindi naging kurakot, [siya iyon],” Robredo added.
