Vice President Leni Robredo went to Kabasalan,
Zamboanga Sibugay to visit a Fisherfolk organization well known for restoring the dying fishing industry on Friday, July 26.
Robredo tour the community’s mangrove rehabilitation
project along Sibugay Bay in Barangay Concepcion sitting on the front end of
the boat while chatting with organization leader Roberto “Ka Dodoy” Ballon,
She also mingled with fisherfolk to see how
fishermen catch Lapu-Lapu from fish cages then had a meeting with Ka Dodoy’s organization
Kapunongan sa mga Gagmay’ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC).
Ka Dodoy was the lead star in the film “Ka Dodoy” that
won and gathered awards in Istorya ng Pag-asa Film Festival (INPFF) 2019,
organized by Robredo’s office and the Ayala Foundation Inc.
He and his fellow fishermen in the Kapunongan sa mga
Gagmay’ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC) was instrumental in saving the
fishing industry in their community by starting a mangrove planting movement to
save their depleting fish stock.
Robredo lauded Ballon’s group effort in restoring the fish industry
alive with their initiatives and pledged assistance to fishermen from KGMC
during a meeting with them.“Marami na din po akong mga fishing communities na napuntahan. Pare-pareho ng reklamo: wala na ang isda, wala na ang hanapbuhay. Pero iyong ginawa niyo dito, parang imposible noong umpisa, ‘di ba? Imposible noong umpisa. Pero binuhay niyo ulit at marami iyong nakikinabang,” Robredo said.
“Ganado kasi kaming tumulong kapag nakikita naming tinutulungan iyong sarili,” she added.
The Vice President joined the turnover ceremony of the second dormitory for students living in far-flung communities in Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, in partnership with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation.
