Manila, Philippines – The Chinese woman who threw ‘taho’ to a police officer at an MRT station has gone viral in news sites and social media platforms, irking the citizens.

Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday said that what happened should serve as a “wake up call” about the Chinese presence in the country.

Robredo condemned the act of disrespect of Chinese national Jiale Zhang, 23, saying it was an “insult” to the Philippines.

“Hindi lang pambabastos sa pulis, pero pambabastos ito sa bansa natin,”  the vice president said in her weekly radio show on RMN-DXZL 558.

The management of the MRT-3 has implemented a more stringent security measures on the rail system, including a ban on liquids, after it received a bomb threat about three weeks before the Jolo blasts in Sulu last January 27.

MRT authorities said the Chinese student entered Boni Station's baggage inspection area on Saturday morning, where security asked her to consume the taho first before she could be allowed in. She, however, refused to do so.

The security personnel then escalated the foreigner to PO1 William Cristobal to explain the policy on liquid substances. In a fit of anger, Zhang threw the taho at Cristobal.

Robredo also said the special treatment extended by Filipinos to Chinese – which includes letting them have jobs that Philippine citizens can do— might have encouraged some Chinese to be disrespectful to authorities even while in the Philippines.

“[W]ake-up call iyon sa ating lahat. Ano ba talaga? Maraming reklamo na iyong mga trabahong dapat sana sa Pilipino, nabibigay pa sa Instik. Tapos ito pa, parang kinakalinga natin sila tapos binabastos nila tayo,” she said.

Zhang faces charges of direct assault, disobedience to agent of person in authority, and unjust vexation.

Zhang is currently detained at the Mandaluyong police headquarters.
