Manila, Philippines – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Northern Mindanao just rolled out a new environment-friendly public utility jeepney (PUJ) models.

These PUJs will be put on display sometime in December to assure the public that the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte is ready to implement the new PUJ models.

Regional Director Aminoden Guro of LTFRB region 10, said that operators and drivers will be able to swap their old jeepneys with these new PUJs at the display center.

The manufacturers have also expressed their interest in mass producing e-jeepneys in compliance to the government’s PUVMP.

President Duterte has announced that starting January 2018, old PUVs must be replaced with modernized jeepneys, which are either electric, solar-powered or Euro 4-compliant as part of his administration’s initiative to modernize the Philippine transportation.

“The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the [LTFRB] are continuously engaging all stakeholders and key industry players [in the transport sector] in order to make the approach holistic and inclusive,”

Meanwhile, Guro believes that public should see the actual e-jeepneys, for them to see that these are safe and fuel-efficient to use.

“Most people will only believe if they have seen it. That’s why we want the people to see that these e-jeeps are safe aside from being fuel-efficient,” Guro said.

“We have planned, prepared, and now ready for implementation, so that the program will be rolling out within this administration’s term, addressing all issues such as route rationalization and PUV manufacturing,” he said.

The LTRFB official also said that these new models have more seating capacity, equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS), and passengers will be using electronic cards in paying their fare.

Guro encouraged operators and jeepney drivers to support the PUVMP.

“You only have two options: Cooperate and benefit from this program, or oppose and get left behind,” Guro said.
