President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday was conferred with an
honorary doctorate degree by the Moscow State Institute of International
Relations University in Russia.
It is said that the President was supposed to receive the
degree from the same institution during his visit in 2017, which he had to cut
short and went back to the Philippines due to the terror attack in Marawi City.
This is the first honorary doctorate degree that President
Duterte accepted since he assumed office in 2016.
"I have never accepted an honorary doctorate. I have
never done anything for accolades. From my father I learned that public service
is the greatest honor and its own reward," quoting what Duterte said from
Teddy Locsin’s tweet
An honorary degree is being awarded often in recognition of
one's life experiences. It is denoted by the letters "h.c.", which is
an abbreviation for "honoris causa", meaning "for the sake of
honor."
In 2017, the president refused the offer of the University
of the Philippines (UP) to confer him the Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa.
