Manila, Philippines – Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso
on Friday instructed the police to respect human rights suspects during drug
busts operation.
Mayor Isko also ordered the Manila Police to give a high regard
on the protection of human rights at all times as his show of support to the administration’s
anti-drug campaign, speaking at a National Press Club forum in Intramuros.
“‘Yung crimes and killings, I cannot guarantee
[to end] kasi it can happen to anywhere in this world but with regards to the
policy and guidance, ang sabi ko simple lang: habulin lahat ang nagbebenta ng
droga. Gamutin, tulungan, kalinganin ng estado ang mga biktima ng nagbebenta ng
droga. Ito ‘yung mga adik; igalang ang karapatang pantao ng mga suspect,” he said.
The Mayor also believes that drug addiction is a health concern
that needs to be solved in his administration.
The government’s anti-illegal drug campaign all over the
country has been highly controversial among the human rights advocacy groups that are
becoming so eager to scrutinize the growing human rights violations of drug
suspects reaching over 20,000 deaths.
The Philippine National Police also clarified the
number of drug suspects killed from July 1, 2016, until June 30 this year was
only 5,526.
Moreno also advised law enforcers must protect
themselves at all times especially during operations, because their lives are
always at risk fighting the criminals.
“At the same time, pangalagaan ang mga pulis
ang kanilang kaligtasan. Meron ding mahal sa buhay ang mga iyan. Kung nailagay
sila sa sitwasyong alanganin, bagay na dapat naman nilang proteksyonan ang
sarili nila,” Mayor Isko added.
Just recently, United States Ambassador to Manila Sung Kim commends Moreno’s way of handling the anti-drug campaign.
“We appreciate your
approach. You’re dealing with it in a manner that is consistent with human
rights and rule of law,” Kim said.
